It
all comes back to when you were a kid. Playing, building and creating;
expressively and instinctively. It’s about the process: tuning out the world,
embracing the materials, and allowing intuition to guide me. I’ve heard musicians
talk about a great jam, where all the instruments and elements bond together to
form a new sound. One so amazing that it feels as though it is being created by
something greater than you. This idea transcends throughout the art-world, and
is relevant to all of my work.
I
consider myself to be a maker of surrealist objects and environments. My work
is inspired by the many macro and micro-cosms we experience and observe as a
culture. I push the idea of digging deeper, and going beyond the surface, while
at the same time seeing a bigger picture. Secret cavities, skewed perspectives,
and fluctuating scale represent alternate and multiple perceptions, overloading
the viewer with information and arousing curiosity. The goal of my work is to
entice people see more, investigate each and every crack and crevice, and let
their imaginations run wild.
Conversing
with a friend of mine, I said “Tommy, why do we do it? What drives this desire
to observe and create?” He looked over at me and smiled. “Mike” he said, “It’s
all a part of the celebration of life”
